Why Asbestos is Killing American Workers

We all heard of Absestos and the horrible consequences it has in our health. Asbestosis is "a form of lung disease (pneumoconiosis)" which causes interstitial fibrosis or scarring of the lungs.

Asbestosis is progressive and, for the most part, irreversible. Respiratory impairment worsens with time, even if exposure to asbestos has ceased. Asbestosis is usually found in asbestos workers and not in the general public. People with asbestosis have shortness of breath, often along with a cough. Asbestos cretes Mesothelioma, and Mesothelioma is a form of cancer which affects mesothelial tissue in the lungs, peritoneum or pericardium.

The biggest concern mesothelioma is that can arise both from visceral and parietal peritoneum. It is diagnosed in advanced stages in most cases, and it often takes considerable time to arrive at the correct diagnosis, as the mean symptoms-to-diagnosis time reported is 122 days.

The most frequently reported initial symptoms are abdominal pain (35%), abdominal swelling (31%), anorexia, marked weight loss, and ascites ; less frequently night sweats and hypercoagulability. Clinical presentation with fever of unknown origin, intestinal obstruction, or surgical emergency (due to acute inflammatory lesions) have been reported. Mesothelioma (cancer of the mesothelium) is a disease in which cells of the mesothelium become abnormal and divide without control or order. They can invade and damage nearby tissues and organs.

Mesothelioma is defined as an ICD-O histology code of 9050-9053. Data are presented for a five-year time period. Mesothelioma cell viability was decreased in a dose-dependent manner by lovastatin (5 to 30 microM).

These effects were not reversed by exogenous growth factors or cholesterol, but were reversed by addition of doses of micro mevalonate, confirming that lovastatin affected mesothelioma viability by inhibiting mevalonate synthesis.
This is based on the fact that Mesothelioma is a cancer of the thin lining surrounding the lung. That's why this disease is almost always fatal, often within a few months of diagnosis.

The scary part about this ilness: is that mesothelioma has a much longer latency period compared with lung cancer (40 years versus 15-20 years). Understanding this, mesothelioma is therefore likely to be found among workers who were first exposed to asbestos at an early age.

Mesothelioma is always fatal. Mesothelioma has also been found in individuals who were exposed to asbestos only once decades earlier. The only known cause of mesothelioma is asbestos. As we mentioned before, mesothelioma has a much longer latency period compared with lung cancer (40 years versus 15-20 years), and that is why mesothelioma is always fatal. Once you found out that you have mesothelioma, it is usually to late.

Exposure to asbestos has also been associated with an increased incidence of esophageal, kidney, laryngeal, pharyngeal, and buccal cavity cancers.

As with other known chronic occupational diseases, disease associated with asbestos generally appears about twenty years following the first occurrence of exposure: There are no known acute effects associated with exposure to asbestos.

Exposure to ozone for several hours, at relatively low concentrations, has been found to significantly reduce lung function. Also this sort of exposure induce respiratory inflammation in normal, healthy people during exercise. This decrease in lung function generally is accompanied by symptoms including chest pain, coughing, sneezing, and pulmonary congestion.

Also it is vital to remind readers, that exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) is a significant cause of lung cancers in people who themselves do not use tobacco. Let's don't forget that between 3000 and 6000 lung cancer deaths per year in the United States are caused by exposure to ETS.

Is Mesothelioma Of Great Concern To You?

The two places in which mesothelioma can develop are the lungs and the abdomen, but it is most commonly found in the lungs. None of these treatments seem to be highly effective in curing patients, but like other types of cancer, research is being done to try and find a treatment that will successfully heal Mesothelioma patients. If you have been affected by this disease your quality of life may have, or will in the future suffer by having being infected with Mesothelioma.

Should I consider Mesothelioma Litigation? If you have mesothelioma, the employer or organization that put you into contact with asbestos is at fault and you deserve compensation. You can also browse the Internet for mesothelioma-related information, mesothelioma pictures, more information on asbestos, etc.

The classic histopathology of the mesothelioma is a biphasic tumor with both an epithelioid and sarcomatoid or spindle cell component. What is really unique about this new mesothelioma treatment study is the fact that this is the first trial to investigate the use of chemotherapy before surgery and radiation. Usually, patients with pleural, peritoneal, or pericardial malignant mesothelioma are treated with radiation or chemotherapy, depending on the stage of the disease, the patient's age, and his/her overall health.

Pharmaceutical companies are conducting trials to come up with the right combination of drugs that can produce better results for treating pericardial mesothelioma. Radiation therapy, as applied to malignant mesothelioma uses the same basic technology as other forms of medical radiation insofar as the technique employs high energy x-rays to kill cancer cells. Even acute symptoms of mesothelioma may be mistakenly associated with other diseases.

Find a mesothelioma lawyer today. Mesothelioma is caused by exposure to asbestos without sufficient protection. Malignant mesothelioma is graded upon the extent they have spread.

In 1968, there were 153 deaths caused by mesothelioma but in 2003, statistics shows 1874 deaths. The necessity for the evolution of alternative ways to treat patients suffering from mesothelioma arises because of the complex nature of different types of cancers, and because patients respond differently to various types of medical care. Even today, there are around 3,000 cases of mesothelioma being diagnosed in the United States every year.

One rare cancer that affects the lungs is Mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a kind of cancer, which is inflicted by exposure to asbestos most frequently used in industrial and residential places till the late seventies. What Jobs Are Associated With Mesothelioma: Asbestos was used in a lot of occupations.

While no blood tests confirm a diagnosis of malignant mesothelioma, there are certain blood abnormalities that suggest the presence of a cancer. Just a couple of months of exposure to asbestos can lead to mesothelioma 30 years later. It is also known that the major cause for pleural mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos.

You see the only way to contract Pleural Mesothelioma is by being exposed to Asbestos. Although there is no current cure, pleural mesothelioma can be treated in a number of ways including: chemotherapy (and other drug-type therapy), radiation, intra-operative photodynamic therapy, and surgery. As the time passes and the disease grows older, the symptoms of all the three types of Mesothelioma pleural, peritoneal and pericardial start appearing in more vigorous form.

Should we expect mesothelioma lung cancer increases not only from asbestos exposure after another 20 - 30 years? A well specialized lawyer who deals with mesothelioma cases can help you maximize your compensation. However, in general mesothelioma has a latency period of 35-40 years from the time of exposure to asbestos to the actual development of symptoms.

Children toys coming with dangerous asbestos fibres

Asbestos is fibrous silicate mineral which occurs naturally. Asbestos is considered a human carcinogen by the federal Department of Health and Human Services. When asbestos is inhaled, the results can be deadly and can damage an individual’s body through the development of mesothelioma cancer. Asbestos can cause lung cancer or asbestosis, in which fibrous tissue scars the lungs.

According to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) asbestos was mined for use in thermal/acoustic insulator used for fire proofing, roofing and siding shingles made with asbestos cement, textured paint and patching compounds used on wall and ceiling joints, artificial ashes and embers for gas-fired fireplaces and for asbestos blanket or tape for hot water and steam pipes.

In late 2007, the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) found asbestos- infected toys had reached the shelves of thousands of toy stores across the country. The CSI Fingerprint Examination Kit, which was made in China, had been found to contain asbestos in its white and glow powder. Families affected by the tainted toy should also consider in filing lawsuit for the exposure of substantial quantities of tremolite asbestos against the manufacturer.

ADAO has also continued its testing of other products and found several of them containing asbestos, including additional children’s toys. ADAO is an organization that utilizes volunteers affected directly or indirectly by asbestos-related illnesses like mesothelioma.

Some of the toys found to be infected by asbestos are:

1. CSI Fingerprint Examination Kit

2. Ja-Ru Toy Clay (found among three varieties of the product)

3. Art Skills' Clay Bucket (asbestos found in six colors of clay)

One of the concerns is use of talc baby powder on babies, which could contain small amounts of asbestos. Other products that have been found with asbestos contamination, according to the ADAO, include:

1. Scotch High Performance and All Weather Duct tapes

2. DAP Crack Shot Spackling Paste

3. DAP 33 Window Glazing

4. Gardner Leak Stopper

ADAO also found that hair rollers, hot plates, powdered cleansers and small appliances were at risk for adversely affecting public health with asbestos fibers. Consumer Affairs, had issued the following tips to assist parents, relatives and friends while purchasing toys for children, in order to better protect children from asbestos exposure. The list includes the following:

• While shopping read all warnings that may include a toy breaking, containing small parts or fire and choking hazards.

• Read product reviews that are both done by independent panels and consumers.

• Research information on the most recent product recalls.

• Inspect toys; any toys that are broken should be thrown away.

• Before buying, consider how and where products were assembled.

What to do if your Child is Exposed to Asbestos?

If a child is exposed or even may have potentially been exposed to asbestos containing tremolite, it is essential to get medical assistance immediately. Because of the nature of asbestos-induced conditions, if a child is exposed to asbestos and goes untreated they could develop mesothelioma cancer years later, which is why immediate medical care is advisable.

Exposure of asbestos can be prevented, especially among children, it may be necessary to develop an asbestos lawsuit to receive compensation for the irreversible damages caused by the exposure of asbestos. Mesothelioma sufferers should locate an experienced mesothelioma attorney to learn more about developing a mesothelioma lawsuit

Plueral Effusion - One Sign of Mesothelioma

Asbestos was once used in building materials and certain textiles as a retardant to flames. Older buildings have a strong possibility of containing the substance, which is now removed during remodeling of structures for health reasons. While asbestos certainly protected a building and its occupants from fire by keeping the flames from spreading, many people who have been in contact with asbestos began to exhibit serious illness. Even today, crew members who are paid to remove asbestos have a high risk of becoming sick with a specialized from of cancer called mesothelioma. It's difficult to peg someone with the disease until it has been around for a while, when specialized symptoms begin to show up in addition to general symptoms, which could be reminiscent of a common cold or flu.

In this disease, cancer cells attack the protective coverings surrounding organs, called the mesothelium. The most common of these to be attacked is the pleura, the outer lining of the lungs, because asbestos is often inhaled. Other common places to find mesothelioma cells are in the peritoneum and pericardium, the lining of the abdominal cavity and heart, respectively. These cells, after causing a display of general symptoms, begin to cause a display of symptoms that are more specialized, though it does take some time. One of these symptoms is called pleural effusion.

Pleural effusion is one of the more common specialized symptoms for mesothelioma, and catching it means you should take a biopsy to make sure whether or not cells are to blame. Pleural effusion is an accumulation of fluid between the parietal pleura. This is the pleura (protective lining) covering the walls of the chest and the diaphragm. The visceral pleura, or that of the lungs, will also begin to accrue fluids.

When someone is suffering from the disease, these two linings will be covered in mesothelial cells. These cells are always covered in a thin layer of fluid on their own, in order to act as a lubricant between the lungs and the walls of the chest. Excess fluid is then absorbed into the blood and the lymph vessels in order to maintain a balance. Of course, this "balance" often results in far too much fluid in that area. This is when an effusion occurs.

There are two different types of pleural effusions: transudates and exudates. A transudate is a clear fluid that forms because of an imbalance between the normal production and removal of fluids in the area. Diseased cells, though, don't necessarily cause it, which means it is probably not a sign of mesothelioma at all. In fact, the most common cause of transudates is heart failure, not cancer. The second type, the exudates, is the type that results from mesothelioma. This fluid is often cloudy because it contains a number of cells and proteins. In order to find out which effusion a patient is suffering from, a sample of the fluid needs to be taken and tested.

Before that, though, symptoms need to occur in a patient that reveals that he or she is suffering from pleural effusion. Normally, they will have shortness of breath, called "dyspnea", and sometimes a mild or sharp pain in the chest region. Doctors will not be able to hear breathing with the use of a stethoscope, and tapping the chest will reveal dull rather than hollow sounds. A simple x-ray is usually adequate to find pleural effusion, and to further test for mesothelioma, a needle biopsy of the pleura needs to be taken. An open surgical biopsy can also be used, but it is normally limited to more severe cases, or cases where the use of a needle would be difficult.

Pleural effusion is one of the best ways for medical officials to find and test for the disease. Because it is a cancer that does not have many telling signs, doctors need to work with the few it does have. If they believe a patient has pleural effusion, it is almost always immediately tested in order to find out if it has been caused by mesothelioma or simply an imbalance in fluids. Of course, combined with other symptoms that may be exhibited by mesothelioma, doctors can often guess whether or not it is cancerous cells that are causing the effusion or not. If you believe you are having the symptoms for this even greater symptom of mesothelioma, and you know you have been around asbestos in the past, it is important that you check with your doctor to make sure everything is alright.

Building a Strong Mesothelioma Case

Have you been diagnosed with mesothelioma? Have you been told that your mesothelioma is the result of prolonged asbestos exposure? Does your insurance company give you problems over medical payments because of the lack of true evidence that your mesothelioma was work related and began decades ago? If you answered yes to these questions, you have grounds to file a mesothelioma lawsuit.

In order to build a good, strong mesothelioma case, the first thing you should do is gather all of your medical diagnosis papers and any past documentation of your work. Past documentation could include pay stubs, tax papers, or any other documents that shows where you worked. You will also want to gather all of your insurance information and documentation as well. Your mesothelioma lawyer will request all of this information in order to begin your case.

Once you have given your lawyer all of the necessary paperwork, you want to keep in contact with your lawyer and let them know of your progression. Most lawyers will work with you and even come to your home if you are unable to come to their offices. Be honest with the information that you provide to the lawyer. Do not hold or hid any information. Everything you say to your lawyer will help him or her work successfully on your case.

It is good to plan for the unknown. Mesothelioma can be deadly. You should speak with your lawyer and your family about any directives that give them guidance on your condition and your case just in case you are no longer able to speak for yourself. Put this in writing. This is a very important part of building a strong case. If you do become unable to speak for yourself and there are not instructions for anyone else, your case will weaken and possibly end. So, you want to be sure everyone knows what to do in the unknown.

Inform your mesothelioma attorney of the names of anyone else who could have been exposed to asbestos as a result of you bringing the fibers home on your clothes. These people would be the ones who lived with you when you worked for the company where you were exposed to asbestos. They also may be in danger of mesothelioma.

Building a good, strong mesotheloma case is something that you can discuss with your attorney. They will be able to tell you what all you need to build your case. Each case is unique and individual, so your mesothelioma attorney will be able to tell you which ways would work best for your case so that you can build a very strong case.

Mesothelioma - History, Hazards And Dietary Advice

History of asbestos.

There are four main types of asbestos; Amosite (brown fibers), Anthophyllite (gray fibers), white Christie, and blue Crocidolite. Chrysotile has curly fibers while the other three have rod like fibers. These fibers fragment into dust quite readily and waft into the air. They can adhere to skin or clothing and are easily swallowed or inhaled.

Half a century ago, asbestos was hailed by many as a miracle product. They said nearly anything could be made from this mineral. It as used as an additive to reinforce mortar and plastics. Asbestos fibers can also be separated into fine threads that do not conduct electricity and are unaffected by heat or chemicals.

Use of asbestos drastically increased during World War II. Shipbuilding incorporated asbestos extensively in freighters and support vessels to insulate boilers, steam pipes and hot water pipes. Asbestos became the miracle construction material as it was readily obtained, processed, and transported. After WWII cars used asbestos in brake shoes and clutch pads. Asbestos found its way into residential and industrial building materials, water supply, sewage materials, ceiling and floor tiles, and vermiculite garden materials to name a few products.

In the 1970's, following the discoveries of the health dangers of asbestos dust inhalation, the U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission prohibited the use of asbestos in several products that could liberate asbestos fibers into the environment during use. Regulations governing the use of asbestos and public concern since 1970 have created a significant drop in the use of asbestos in the United States. The same pattern has been seen in most of the developed world.

In 1989 all new uses of asbestos were banned by the Environmental Protection Agency while any old uses before that year were still allowed. The EPA suggested that schools inspect for damaged asbestos and eliminate any exposure or enclose it in protective barriers. Vermiculite, widely used in horticulture, became a concern of the EPA . They recommended outdoor use, limiting the amount of dust used, and keeping vermiculite damp.

Health hazards

Asbestos may create serious health hazards such as coughing, lung damage, shortness of breath, and lung cancer. Most people do not become sick in the early stages of contact but usually need continued exposure. This often means on jobs such as mining, milling, manufacturing asbestos products, and the building construction industry. Firemen, demolition and destruction workers, drywall removers, and anyone else involved in trades that involve destruction of buildings, ships, and automobiles are also exposed to the hazards of asbestos.

Over a number of years continual exposure to asbestos can cause very serious health problems, such as mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a rare type of carcinoma of the membrane that lines numerous cavities of the body, including the lungs, abdomen and heart, and has been associated with exposure to asbestos dust. In mesothelioma, the cells of the mesothelioma metastasize and damage adjacent organs and tissues.

Mesothelioma may not develop for a long period of time, often as long as twenty-five or thirty-five years before full blown symptoms appear. Not all workers who have been exposed will develop diseases, but workers who have been exposed to it may bring fibers on their clothing, hair, shoes, and skin home to their families. To circumvent this risk, most industries require workers to bathe and change their clothing before they leave work.

Dietary advice for Mesothelioma patients

Doctors and nutritionists may recommend a special cancer diet because many mesothelioma patients tend to lose their appetites due to worry over their condition. Also, those who are undergoing treatment may choose not to eat because of the unpleasant side effects they may experience. Chemotherapy and some medications may cause an imbalance of nutrients that must be corrected in order to keep the body as strong as possible and to keep the patient from losing an excessive amount of weight. Other side effects of mesothelioma treatment can include nausea, vomiting, constipation, dry mouth and a change in the sense of smell or taste.

In our childhood we were all told to eat our vegetables. Forcing down cabbage and sprouts was supposed to make us bigger and stronger. Well, so it is for mesothelioma patients. Diet is often an overlooked subject for cancer patients, but eating the right nutritional foods for strength and energy is just as important as taking the proper medication.

Mesothelioma patients undergoing treatment must follow a special cancer diet devised by their nutritionists. The details of every patient's mesothelioma diet will vary. Some patients will need to incorporate more fat into their diets, while others may need more protein. Cancer diets involve eating the correct amounts of protein and calories as well as drinking the right amount of water to keep the ailing body replenished and energized. The body needs plenty of nourishment when it is going through chemotherapy or even when the patient is taking certain medications.

It is important that patients devise a cancer diet under the guidance of their doctor and nutritionist to ensure that they obtain the proper amount of nutrients to improve their quality of life.

Protein is important for any cancer patient because it helps repair tissue damaged by surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation. Protein also helps maintain a strong and healthy immune system, lowering a mesothelioma patient's risk of infection after aggressive cancer treatments. The National Cancer Institute recommends increasing protein in a cancer diet with cheese, milk, ice cream, yoghurt, eggs, nuts, peanut butter, meats and fish.

Fats are an essential part of the cancer diet because they supply the body with the necessary energy it needs while undergoing treatment. The amount of fats a cancer diet should consist of is dependent on a mesothelioma patient's age and body size. The National Cancer Institute recommends increasing caloric intake with such foods as butter, milk, cheese, honey, sugar, granola and dried fruits.

Water is another essential component of the cancer diet. Without a significant amount of water, the body will dehydrate. It is important that anyone undergoing cancer treatment drink sufficient water to keep their bodies hydrated and replenished.

Does Flaxseed Improve Health?

The health benefits attributed to flaxseed in the diet are almost too numerous to mention. It reportedly offers protection against heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. It lowers cholesterol and high blood pressure and is effective for relieving symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, asthma, and migraines. Flaxseed helps people relax and improves sleep. It restores hormonal balance in women, and improves dry eye syndrome. Back in the 1950s, a German biochemist by the name of Joanna Budwig is famous for successfully treating terminally ill cancer patients by feeding them her prescribed diet including a combination of flaxseed oil and cottage cheese.

Do not rush out to buy flaxseed just yet, at least according to Nutrition Action Newsletter, a reputable publication from the Center for Science in the Public Interest. According to a December 2005 article titled Just the Flax- A Miracle Seed Comes Down to Earth, there is only limited evidence that alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), one of the main ingredients of flaxseed, can protect the heart. The article also cites a 2005 study involving 45,000 men that found those who ate the highest amounts of ALA were more likely to develop advanced prostate cancer than those who ate the least ALA. The author was quick to point out that flax was not singled out, and the cancer rate was linked to ALA intake from all sources. In other words, proceed with caution.

Flaxseed is also contains extremely high levels of potent antioxidants called lignans, known best for their cancer fighting properties. Nutrition Action cites a Finnish study that reported women with the highest blood levels of lignans were 60% less likely to have breast cancer. Unfortunately, 29 of the 194 women who did develop breast cancer had some of the highest levels. Three years later the study was repeated and found no link between lignans and the incidence of breast cancer.

Confused? So are the experts. Mayoclinic.com has evaluated the data from flaxseed research and found its use as a laxative the only benefit that graded higher than unclear scientific evidence exists.

If you do not like fish, healthy aging expert Dr. Andrew Weil recommends whole flaxseed as a source of omega-3 fatty acids, but is less enthusiastic about flaxseed oil, expressing concerns about spoilage and the lack of lignans which are often removed during processing.

An article by Harvard Health Publications sums of the confusion best by concluding this: It is too early to say whether flaxseeds are right for you. They do contain lignans that function as phytoestrogens- but so does soy. They are very rich in ALA, which may reduce the risk of heart disease-but may also increase the risk of developing prostate cancer in men.

There might be something there, but it is clear we do not have all of the answers yet on the benefits or risks of taking flaxseed.

What Exactly Is Peritoneal Mesothelioma?

Peritoneal mesothelioma is also referred to as abdominal mesothelioma and it is a form of rear cancer that affects the lining of the abdomen making fluid to build up. In the United States, only 100 to 500 cases of this illness are reported. Some of the signs that you can look out for to recognize this disease are weight loss, swelling or pain in the abdomen, fever, anemia and bowel obstruction. Some other symptoms may be minor and you may not realize them. The major cause of this diseased is believed to be the exposure to asbestos which can be ingested in the intestines or inhaled. However, there is no conclusive evidence that these is the cause and therefore nothing official.

If you suspect to have peritoneal mesothelioma, you are advised to see a doctor immediately to avert an imminent crisis. It has been reported that 70% to 80% of people who suffer from the illness have been exposed to asbestos at some point in their lives. Patients are advised to mention if they have come into contact with the substance. It is very difficult to diagnose the illness. The first thing a doctor orders is a chest and an abdomen x ray. Then the lungs are tested because the tumor forms near the organs to cause shortness of breath. Usually a thoracoscopy is performed. This is a test that is done that sees an object called a thoracoscope inserted in the chest cavity to search for the disease. The patient is under local anesthesia and the procedure is usually painless.

In the same way, the doctor may look inside the abdomen but, this procedure is called peritoneoscopy. Also the patient is put under local anesthesia. Both procedures are done in a hospital. During these procedures, a biopsy is usually done. A biopsy is the testing of a sample tissue under a microscope, to find out whether there are cancer cells. Therefore, some tissues of the affected area are usually cut to provide the samples. There are a lot of mis diagnosis for peritoneal mesothelioma because of the complex nature in diagonizing it. Peritoneal mesothelioma is fatal depending on the size of the cancer. There are treatments available and with the right follow up, a patient can recover totally.

There are several treatment options and, they include surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, gene therapy and others. Surgery is one of the best way to cure a malignant tumor and, there are several ways to do it with surgery. There are over 5 surgical procedures to treat peritoneal mesothelioma. High energy gamma rays and x rays are used to treat the disease and this therapy is called radiation. There are several kinds of radiation treatments and according to the uniqueness of each case, many treatments are administered. A patient can be treated using drugs to kill the cancer and this is called chemotherapy. The drugs can be administered orally or through injections. Some of these treatments can leave a patient very weak. Another side effect is loss of hair.

A Glimpse At Mesothelioma Info From The Past

If you look up mesothelioma info you will find that this is a term given to the cancer that is caused by asbestos. This is a disease that is contacted mostly by those who work in close proximity with asbestos products and materials. What is asbestos? This is a mineral which has some extraordinary properties, such as being fireproof and an exceptional insulator.

It seems that the ancient Greeks who coined the name for this mineral, meaning "inextinguishable," knew that it harmed humans if they were exposed to it for a long time. However, in modern times, since the products containing asbestos were very popular, and profitable, the dangers were ignored.

In the 1900s, it was first publicly accepted that asbestos and all things that contain asbestos could cause death among those who were continuously exposed to it for a long time. Twenty years later, doctors in England had sufficient mesothelioma info to conclusively support the relationship between the prolonged exposure to asbestos and death; this too was particularly attributed to lung diseases.

It was also found that with better ventilation, not only was indoor air quality improved, but the risks and fatalities were lowered. These steps were legalized and became standard procedure in England and in may other countries across the world.

Though mesothelioma info was widely circulated amongst manufactures and all those who were concerned with making and promoting asbestos products, it was only in the 1970s that the workers were at last protected from harm. Until then, everyone chose to ignore the dangers, only looking at the high profits that these asbestos containing items were generating. By that time, the deadly material had already clamed many lives of individuals who had worked with it, as well as the lives of many of their family members.

It took the world more than half a century to realize, accept, and to take action to curtail one of the most harmful side effects in the industrial field. Though complete mesothelioma info was known as early as the 1900s, people were sacrificed for profit since the asbestos products were in high demand at that time and the lower class laborers were deemed expendable.

Unfortunately, during these 50 plus years, many asbestos cases have developed and a great number of people who worked with and were exposed to the material had already developed cancer or mesothelioma and were on their death bed. This is a classical example of lives being sacrificed for profit.

3 Popular Mesothelioma (Asbestos Cancer) Tests

Mesothelioma is one of the rarer forms of cancer with approximately 2000 cases reported in the UK each year. There are two types of mesothelioma; pleural mesothelioma (which causes the lining of the lungs to become thicker) and peritoneal mesothelioma (which causes the lining of the abdomen to become thicker). Both of these forms of cancer are almost always caused by asbestos exposure hence the nickname asbestos cancer. Despite it being one of the less common types of cancer there are still a number of tests out there which I will be outlining in this article.

1) X-RAY:- One of the first tests your doctor is likely to recommend is an x-ray of the chest, the abdomen or both. This will allow them to see a number of things. First, it may reveal the presence of asbestos in or around the lungs or the stomach. Secondly, it will reveal any build up of fluid either around the lungs (which could turn out to be pleural effusion) or around the abdomen (which could turn out to be ascites). Finally, it will allow your doctor to see any thickening, swelling, lumps or tumours around the lungs and abdomen which could turn out to be mesothelioma. If the x-ray does reveal any of the above abnormalities your doctor is likely to recommend further testing.

2) FINE NEEDLE ASPIRATION CYTOLOGY (FNAC):- If the x-ray reveals a build up of fluid in the lining of the lungs or the abdomen your doctor is likely to suggest FNAC. This test involves using a fine needle to take a sample of fluid from either the pleura (the lining of the lungs) or the peritoneum (the lining of the abdomen). The fluid can then be tested in a lab for the presence of cancerous mesothelioma cells. If the FNAC reveals that the fluid contains mesothelioma cells your doctor will be able to discuss treatment options with you.

3) BIOPSY:- If the x-ray reveals any abnormalities in the shape of the pleura or the peritoneum your doctor is likely to recommend a biopsy. This normally involves using a special type of needle to take a sample of cells from the affected areas. These cells can then be analysed in a lab for the presence of cancerous mesothelioma cells. If cancerous cells are discovered your doctor will then be able to talk you through the treatment options available.

Although mesothelioma is one of the rarest types of cancer that does not mean you should neglect the available tests. If you have previously been exposed to asbestos or have any reason to believe you may have contracted this type of cancer go speak with your doctor immediately. Mesothelioma is much more treatable when it is identified early and that can only be achieved through proper testing.

Whilst every intention has been made to make this article accurate and informative, it is intended for general information only. Mesothelioma is a very serious, life threatening condition and you should discuss any concerns, treatments or lifestyle changes fully with your doctor.

Mesothelioma: You’re Health in Jeopardy

Are you at risk of Mesothelioma?

If you are above 40 and have ever been exposed to asbestos continuously for more than 2 months in last 15-40 years, then you are at risk of Mesothelioma. It is a rare but deadly cancer of membrane cells, which covers some vital parts of our body like lungs, abdominal cavity and heart, called mesothelium. Like in other cancers, in mesothelioma the membrane cells divide ruthlessly causing abnormal growth, which ultimately damage the lining of vital organ such as lungs and abdomen.

Causes of Mesothelioma

Asbestos a mineral, used in different processes including building, shipyard and manufacturing in the days of World War II and for a few more decades, is the main cause of Mesothelioma. Researches have proved that those who have worked in asbestos related industries are mostly at risk of Mesothelioma. The minute asbestos particles go into human body through nose or mouth during inhalation, talking or any other reason. They reach lungs or abdomen and damage the lining, causing Mesothelioma. Due to its long latency period, mesothelioma can attack you even 15 – 40 years after the inhalation of asbestos particles. Even the family members of person working in asbestos related industries could be vulnerable to mesothelioma.

Treatments for Mesothelioma

Because Mesothelioma is a newly found disease, many doctors may not be able to diagnose it. However, if you have a known history of asbestos exposure you should ask your doctor to look for the symptoms of this disease. The good news is that there is a treatment for mesothelioma in the early stages. Some treatment options for mesothelioma cancers are surgical removal of the effected tissues; chemotherapy and radiotherapy. However, the prognosis of later stage mesothelioma patients is bleak and the average survival time after diagnosis is 12-24 months.

Mesothelioma Compensations

The owners of Asbestos related industries were quite aware of the health hazards of asbestos. However, they persisted with its use without issuing any warnings or taking steps for avoiding the health hazards. This is the reason why US courts have awarded huge sums as compensations to the Mesothelioma patients/families by the companies/persons responsible for causing asbestos exposure.

Survival Rate of Mesothelioma Cancer May Increase Because Of Diet

Even if an individual is exposed to asbestos, they are advised to eat healthy foods, which may provide a decreased risk of mesothelioma cancer developing, according to a paper written by a group of individuals from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the Louisiana State University.

The report, which was compiled by a Diet and Mesothelioma taskforce, followed 116 individuals, half of whom had mesothelioma cancer and the other half had been exposed to asbestos but did not develop mesothelioma or other asbestos-related conditions. The two groups were relatively similar among tobacco use as well as income and level of asbestos exposure.

Those who wrote the report compared the two groups and found that:

* Individuals who remained cancer-free after exposure to asbestos were found to have eaten nearly twice the amount of locally/homegrown vegetables and fruits as those stricken with mesothelioma.

* Victims of mesothelioma ate more "cake, candy and pie than those who stayed cancer-free."

* Those consuming what are known as cruciferous vegetables - such as mustard greens, collards, broccoli, turnip greens, cabbage or brussel sprouts - were likely to remain mesothelioma-free even after exposure to asbestos occurred.

While more research is likely needed to verify these results, scientists at the NCI are putting faith into these dietary guidelines. The NCI, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC), Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Government have partnered together to create a campaign on the importance of eating vegetables and fruits to ensure a healthy lifestyle.

Foods to Improve Mesothelioma

The taskforce determined dietary habits had a role in the fight against cancer and several experts have also claimed this; eating certain types of foods, especially when organically grown, will likely decrease the chance of developing mesothelioma cancer for an individual who had endured asbestos exposure. The following are a list of foods found to be beneficial against deadly conditions such as asbestosis or mesothelioma.

* Olives, which contain maslinic and oleanolic acids can promote apoptosis - the death of cancer cells.

* Cabbage is high in glucosinolates (anticarcinogenic compounds), also raw cabbage contains substances to rid the body of carcinogens.

* Flaxseeds are filled with lignans and omega-3 fatty acids - potentially capable of lowering the risk of breast cancer in women and colon cancer among both sexes.

* Raspberries - most berries - are a source of fiber, vitamin C, ellagic acid and selenium.

* Mushrooms are considered essential because the can suppress the growth of prostate cancer cells and breast cancer enzymes.

* Pumpkin as well as carrots and winter squash all contain high levels of carotenoids and betacarotene.

* The phenolic compounds found in onions are categorized as anticancer components.

What is Asbestos-Induced Mesothelioma?

Asbestos-induced mesothelioma is an incurable form of cancer that develops after fibrous tissue bundles containing tremolite are inhaled and begin to develop cancerous cells on the interior lining of the lungs. Unfortunately, the mineral was unregulated for decades while millions of U.S. citizens were at risk for exposure to this silent killer. It was mined from vermiculite and used as an alternative, less-costly and fire-retardant ingredient in insulation.

There are several variations of mesothelioma cancer with pleural malignant mesothelioma considered the most deadly and having the lowest survival rate.

Other Treatments for Increasing Mesothelioma Survival Rate

There are currently no treatments in existence that can cure mesothelioma cancer or any variation of the unfortunate disease. However, scientists and researchers are working continuously to find treatments to decrease the severity of an individual's symptoms as well as increase the survival rate among victims.

Additionally, scientists keep studying the effects of certain foods and how it affects particular types of cancer. For example, researchers at the NIC within the Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences (DCCPS) have created a research center, with funding, dedicated to the study of dietary intake and cancer. An additional study compared those suffering from prostate, colorectal or breast cancers who ate a diet of omega-3 fatty acids, the results were released in an issue of the Journal of The American Medical Association in January 2006.

The U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH), funded and developed by the government, has developed resources for patients suffering from mesothelioma cancer in order for these individuals to have online access to the most up-to-date clinical trials. Ongoing information for a variety of clinical trials can be found at http://clinicaltrials.gov/.

However, individuals who may be suffering from mesothelioma cancer or any other asbestos-induced condition should not only seek medical attention for their symptoms, but are advised to locate a knowledgeable mesothelioma lawyer who may be able to provide insightful details of a mesothelioma lawsuit. By consulting with a mesothelioma attorney, the potential for being awarded monetary compensation for bills and damages becomes a reality.

U.S. working to give researchers access to mesothelioma information online

Because the problem of rising numbers of mesothelioma victims is beginning to hit full stride—mesothelioma is an asbestos-exposure lung cancer that can take up to 50 years to show up—doctors and researchers are urging organizations to ramp up efforts to understand this deadly disease.

Malignant pleural mesothelioma is the most common type of this disease. It is a particularly aggressive lung cancer that attacks the space between or the linings of the lungs. In a recent study of more than 4000 patients diagnosed with malignant pleural mesothelioma in Italy, median survival time was found to be 9.8 months after diagnosis.

One of the latest initiatives for helping researchers speed up their work on mesothelioma of all types involves creating a national “bank” of tissue samples for them to work with.

The National Mesothelioma Virtual Bank (NMVB) will collect and organize samples of mesothelioma pleural, peritoneal and pericardial tissues, along with blood and DNA samples. It will catalog and make the samples available for study through an Internet interface that coordinates with existing cancer and other research data.

Much research is already being done on mesothelioma, but the point of the new NMVB is to help researchers everywhere translate their theoretical work into more practical approaches that can actually help patients sooner. The new urgency is a welcome development as more and more cases of mesothelioma are being found in countries around the world.

And you don’t have to have worked in a mine to have been exposed to asbestos. In Wittenoom, Australia, 3000 women and girls who lived in the town—a blue asbestos (crocidolite) mining and milling town—have been identified after some of them began dying of malignant pleural mesothelioma. A study done this summer predicts that the death rate from this disease will nearly double for this group of women in the next 20 years.

Despite the frightening speed with which mesothelioma kills, it’s important to get a mesothelioma diagnosis as soon as possible so that doctors can help you deal with the effects—and to investigate whether you and your family may be eligible to receive compensation through an asbestos lawsuit for your environment-related exposure.
